What Is Cardiovascular Disease?
Cardiovascular disease (CVD), the leading cause of death in both developed and developing countries, has numerous forms that involve the heart or blood vessels including stroke, heart arrhythmia, and coronary artery diseases etc. Over the past 20 years, an increasing number of studies have examined its underlying pathophysiological mechanisms, and new therapies are continually being discovered. However, despite considerable progress in CVD management, mortality and morbidity are still major healthcare concerns, and frequent hospital admissions compromise the daily life and social activities of these patients. Clinical factors such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and obesity interact with behavioral factors will increase the risk of CVD. Patients with CVD usually experience significant levels of disability due to reduction in exercise capacity and loss of physical function, which will lead to decreased life quality as well as increased morbidity and mortality.

• The transgenic mouse models
We have a large variety of transgenic and knockout mouse models relevant to cardiovascular physiology and diseases, such as VEGF mouse, miR-199-sponge mouse and Cripto-1 mouse, etc. During the last decade, the use of transgenic mouse models to investigate the cause of CVD has increased significantly. The transgenic mouse models offer new insights and understanding of those variables that affect cardiovascular dynamics and, most particularly, systemic blood pressure.
• The dog models
The dog models of heart disease allow more accurate studies of left ventricular function and volumes than in rodent models. Models of myocardial infarction/ischemia, ischemic cardiomyopathy, ventricular pressure and pacing-induced dilated cardiomyopathy have been created in dogs for investigation of heart failure and potential CVD therapies.
• The swine models
The swine have been proposed as a good model for human cardiovascular physiology because of their similar heart weight/body weight ratio and coronary circulation compared to humans. The swine models can be utilized in studies to increase our understanding of CVD mechanisms.
