What Is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a metabolic disease that occurs when your body has a prolonged period high blood glucose level. It is classified on the basis of clinical symptoms mainly into type 1 diabetes (insulin deficiency) and type 2 diabetes (insulin resistance). In type 1 diabetes, the insulin-producing β cells of the islets of Lange rhans in the pancreas are destroyed by a TH1-based attack, known as insulitis, at a juvenile age. Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes, arising when the body does not produce enough insulin to compensate for peripheral cells exhibiting increasing insulin resistance (IR) and impaired glucose tolerance. Diabetes can cause many complex complications, leading to the life quality of patients decrease.

Diabetes Study Services at Creative Animodel

Our animal models featuring physiological and pathological changes characteristic of each diabetes subtype are available to provide diabetes study and drug testing services for clients. By monitoring glycated hemoglobin, we can get an expression of the average plasma glucose concentration over time (including the months prior to the measurement). A level ≥ 6.5% is considered a criterion for the diagnosis of diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes models

The animal models in type 1 diabetes include genetic, viral, and chemical models. In genetic models, such as the NOD mouse and BB diabetic rat, diabetes occurs spontaneously with a total dependency on exogenous insulin. Chemical agents used in our chemical models include agents that specifically damage pancreatic beta cells, cause a temporary reduction in insulin production and secretion, or diminish the metabolic efficacy of insulin in target tissues. Streptozotocin and alloxan are the most widely used substances for destruction of pancreatic β cells.

Type 2 diabetes models

Type 2 diabetes models include genetic, chemical, surgical, and diet-induced models. The genetic models are produced through selective breeding, spontaneous mutations, or genetic engineering, such as KK mouse, NZO mouse, and fa/fa diabetic Zucker rat. Chemical models are attained through injection of low doses of streptozotocin, standard doses together with a protecting agent, or a single dose to neonatal rats and other species. Surgical models most frequently involve complete or partial pancreatectomy in dog, cat, mouse, or rat and can be combined with other means of inducing the condition.
