What Is Gouty Arthritis?
Gouty Arthritis, also called gout, is a complex form of inflammatory arthritis characterized by severe, sudden attacks of pain, limited range of motion, inflammation and redness in joints. The joint at the base of the big toe is most commonly attacked. Common complications of gouty arthritis include kidney stones, tophi, and urate nephropathy. The main cause of gouty arthritis is the accumulation of urate crystals in the joint, tendons and surrounding tissues based on the high levels of uric acid in the blood. This can occur because of heavy drinking, high-meat diet, overweight, or genetic predisposition.

Fortunately, gouty arthritis is treatable, and there are several methods to reduce the incidence. Treatment with steroids, colchicine, or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can relieve the symptoms. In acute gouty arthritis, the levels of uric acid can be decreased by lifestyle changes, including eating a diet with low fat dairy products and taking vitamin C. In frequent attacks of gouty arthritis, probenecid and allopurinol can provide long-term prevention.

Creative Animodel has established several animal models of crystal-induced inflammation involving direct injection of monosodium urate (MSU)-crystals into different anatomical structures. Among these models, the rat models reflect a true diarthrodial joint microenvironment in which an acute gouty attack takes place.
Under ultrasonic (US) guidance, the rat knees are randomly injected with a suspension of MSU crystals. The control group receives intra-articular vehicle of phosphate buffered saline (PBS). The experimental group of gouty arthritis models is verified by histopathological analyses and US evaluation at day 1, 3, and 7 compared with control group.
