Hearing loss is a prevalent sensory disorder that causes partial or total inability to hear. Hearing problems can affect the ability to learn to speak in children and cause work related difficulties in adults. There are three main types of hearing loss, conductive hearing loss, sensorineural hearing loss, and mixed hearing loss. The degree of hearing loss is also different among patients. Hearing loss may be caused by different factors, including: exposure to noise, ageing, genetics, some infections, trauma to the ear, certain medications or toxins, and birth complications.
Hearing loss affects about 1.1 billion people and causes disability in 5%. The underlying fundamental knowledge of hearing loss is still severely lacking. However, by immunization, avoiding loud noise, proper care during pregnancy, and avoiding certain medications, half of hearing loss is preventable.

ARHL is a complex disorder with a mixture of genetic and environmental components, a combination that leads to a progressive decline in hearing function with increased age. Mouse models have allowed the relationship between genetic variants and their consequent structural and pathological changes within the ear to be explored, something that is rarely possible in humans. The study of mouse models will provide essential information regarding the molecular and cellular processes occurring in the ageing mammalian cochlea.
• Drug-induced hearing loss models
Aminoglycoside antibiotics are ototoxic because they enter the cochlea and kill the sensory hair cells that enable us to hear. Once dead, the hair cells cannot regenerate, at least not in mammals. Animal models of drug-induced hearing loss models are provided to investigate the nosogenesis and treatment of hearing loss.
