What Is Immune Checkpoint?
Immune checkpoints are molecules of the immune system that can turn up or turn down immune signals. Cancer cells can utilize these checkpoints to protect themselves from the immune system by avoiding the killing of T cells and then escaping from the immune system. Some researches show that tumors co-opt certain immune-checkpoint pathways as a major mechanism of immune resistance, particularly against T cells which are specific for tumor antigens. Because ligand-receptor interactions can initiate many immune checkpoints, it is easy to block these immune checkpoints with antibodies or modulate them with recombinant forms of ligands or receptors.
