Inflammation is a protective response of body tissue faced to harmful stimuli, and this process is complex which usually involves immune cells, blood vessels, and molecular mediators. When inflammation occurs, chemicals from the body's white blood cells are released into the blood or affected tissues to protect your body from foreign substances. This release of chemicals increases the blood flow to the area of injury or infection, and may result in redness and warmth. Some of the chemicals cause a leak of fluid into the tissues, resulting in swelling. This protective process may stimulate nerves and cause pain.

The function of inflammation is to eliminate the initial cause of injury, clear out necrotic cells and tissues damaged, and then initiate tissue repair. Typical symptoms of inflammation include redness, pain, swollen joint or stiffness and even loss of joint function.
The Differences Between Acute Inflammation and Chronic Inflammation
There are two types of inflammation. Acute inflammation starts rapidly (rapid onset) and is the initial response of the body to harmful stimuli. Signs and symptoms won't be present for a long time. On the contrary, chronic inflammation, the long-term inflammation, can last for several months and even years, that is characterized by simultaneous destruction and healing of the tissue from the inflammatory process.
