Overview of Multiple Sclerosis Models
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic immune-mediated demyelinating disease of the central nervous system (CNS) which is caused by autoimmune-mediated loss of myelin. Myelin is the combination of proteins and phospholipids surrounding neurons, and is crucial for axonal protection and electrical insulation. CNS tissue from multiple sclerosis patients shows discrete lesions with inflammatory infiltrates, demyelination, astrogliosis, and early axonal damage. MS is the most common neurological disorder affecting young adults, with a total of 2.5 million individuals living with this illness worldwide; of those, about 400,000 live in the United States.
MS has four different types: relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS), secondary-progressive multiple sclerosis (SPMS), primary-progressive multiple sclerosis (SPMS), and progressive-relapsing multiple sclerosis (PRMS). Among which, SPMS is the most common type.
Currently, there is no method available to prevent and cure for MS. Present study emphasis will focus on slowing or halting progression and/or neurodegeneration, developing new medications to modify immune systems, and the discovery of new diagnostical tool.
Multiple Sclerosis Models Provided by Creative Animodel
MS is a complex disease and there is no a single animal model that can capture the entire spectrum of heterogeneity of human MS, however, over the last few years, quite a few animal models have been used to study the pathogenic mechanisms of MS.
Available models include acute, progressive or relapsing-remitting disease course with elements of inflammation and neurodegeneration, components relevant to human MS. Creative Animodel provides the most commonly used animal models of MS:
• The experimental autoimmune/allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE);
• Viral induced models, mainly Theiler's murine encephalomyelitis virus (TMEV) infection and consequential chronic demyelination;
• Toxin-induced models of demyelination, such as the cuprizone and the lysophosphatidylcholine (lysolecithin) models.
