What Is Osteoarthritis Pain?
Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the most common forms of arthritis, causing pain and immense discomfort to the affected individual. It is characterized by the formation of bony spurs inside the joint spaces and a loss of cartilage. In a healthy joint, there is cartilage to prevent neighboring bones from making contact. While, osteoarthritis pain occurs when the cartilage is lost and boney spur formations are allowed to touch adjacent bones, causing significant inflammation and pain. Osteoarthritis has typically been classified into primary (idiopathic) and secondary osteoarthritis based on the disease etiology. Primary osteoarthritis (POA) is a naturally occurring phenomenon due to degenerative changes in the joint. Secondary osteoarthritis (SOA) is normally associated with causes and/or risk factors leading to osteoarthritis in the joint. These include trauma, congenital diseases, and other diseases or disorders of metabolism or the bone. Identifying and understanding the interplay between the various contributing mechanisms will lead to better treatment options.

An estimated 237 million of the individuals are affected with osteoarthritis in the world and the high prevalence of this disease results in a significant economic burden for the global health care industry. Although extensive substantial resources have been invested to seek therapeutic interventions for this disease, there are still no proven disease-modifying treatments for osteoarthritis. The major objects in osteoarthritis research include elucidating the pathogenesis of disease, determining methods for early diagnosis, and developing strategies for intervention and disease-modifying therapeutics.
