Staphylococcal Scalded Skin Syndrome Models

Creative Animodel is a leading biotech company focusing on in vivo pharmacology researches. With years of experience, we offer professional staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome(SSSS) models for screening, testing and evaluation of novel candidates.

What Is Staphylococcal Scalded Skin Syndrome?

SSSS has an estimated incidence in the general population between 0.09 and 0.56 cases per million inhabitants, 10 times lower than the incidence of toxic epidermal necrolysis. The condition is caused by certain strains of Staphylococcus aureus that release serine protease exfoliative toxin that cleave desmosomal cadherins, specifically desmoglein 1, in the superficial epidermis, resulting in the destruction of cell-cell adhesion and creating blistering and denuding of the skin (Figure 1). SSSS can occur at any age but most commonly is evident in children less than 5 years of age. There is also an increased paediatric incidence in summer and autumn months. Two hypotheses on why children have a higher incidence of SSSS are that they have not yet developed protective antibodies against the staphylococcal toxins and their kidneys are unable to excrete the exfoliative toxin. In adults, the greatest risk factor is an underlying illness, especially renal disease, which accounts for a mortality rate greater than 60%.

Our Staphylococcal Scalded Skin Syndrome Models

Animal models are of considerable value for improving the understanding of the mechanisms behind the SSSS and developing treatment strategies. With years of efforts, Creative Animodel has established several SSSS models in an attempt to reproduce the features of human SSSS in animals. Our SSSS models are induced by exfoliative toxin A and B (ETA and ETB). Gross scores are assigned to the response based on both the appearance of the skin and tactile examination as follows:

ScoresAppearance
0No obvious skin changes
1Nikolsky’s sign (permanent  wrinkling of skin after being rubbed with slight pressure)
2Bullous formation of<3  mm in diameter
3Bullous formation of >3  mm in diameter or webbing of the skin at the hind limbs or frank exfoliation

Rely on our SSSS models, we offer a full range of services to accelerate clients’ drug discovery projects and promote fundamental studies in SSSS disease. Such services include but are not limited to:
• Antimicrobial activity screening
• Drug resistance analysis
• ELISA/CLIA analysis
• Histology analysis
• Imaging study

Creative Animodel offers end-to-end validated pre-clinical models and related services of pharmacology and toxicology. Our high-quality services and reliable results make it possible to meet various demands of antimicrobial studies and antimicrobial drugs development. If you have any questions or specific needs, please feel free to contact us.
